Macallum's Backyard Family Portrait Session
Macallum's Lifestyle Family Photosession
My oh my, had I underestimated my understanding of how much energy kids could have prior to meeting Jill and Andrew's three wonderful girls.
I had the unique pleasure of helping the Macallum family reflect on what their lives were like after 10 years of marriage. I got to spend the evening snapping some excellent memories for this family in their gorgeous Kitchener backyard.
This photoshoot had a profound effect on me- I was hired as a mutual gift by both Andrew and Jill who wanted to give each other a photo collection in recognition of their 10th anniversary. They told me that they wanted some photos that "showed them what their life was like at that point in time".
Needless to say, this photo shoot became much more than a traditional 'pose, smile, click' session that I usually get to work on.
I loved it.
Amidst the girls joyful giggles and Jill and Andrew's knowing smiles, some of the purest family moments began to reveal themselves to my camera, and this got me thinking about what it really means to create family photos.
Ironically, it seemed that when I stopped trying to create these moments, the moments created themselves. I'm not trying to invoke any sort of cliche when as I write this, but perhaps that is the nature of family photography, as it is with families them selves.
Perhaps it is because we've become so used to fabricating the way others experience us that we forget or amazing it can be to let ones' hair down, laugh a little louder and smile a little brighter. Perhaps it is those moments that will mean the most to families as they look back; with images today, in a swirling world of insta-facebook-tweeting-photoshop perfection, it is sometimes important to reflect on the grit- the grass stained knees, quirky grins and tired eyes after a day in the sun.
One way or another, I can't thank this gorgeous family enough for their playful, energetic and authentic approach to creating some images. It was refreshing to experiment with perfect imperfection and to grab some truly gorgeous moments of life and love.
Congratulations once again Andrew and Jill, and thank you Abbie Maggie and Char for an evening of laughter... I'm totally gonna beat you three in our next race to the swing set!
